The month of September has been National Literacy Month. I had the joy of teaching first graders to read for 29 years! But I wasn’t the only teacher for those children…ALL parents are their children’s first teacher. Every day, even when you are not intentionally teaching them, they are learning from you. They watch you, listen to you, and imitate you. Even teenagers are watching and listening more than we think they are. I had a friend one time tell me about being frustrated with her mom when she was younger for all the unsolicited advice she would give her. Then, when she was grown and out on her own, she said, “The voice I kept hearing in my head was my mother’s!”
